The New Year: Your Own Kind of Story

By Monique Sammut | December 31, 2017
Already a New Year

It does not seem like 2017 lasted very long.  Ends can be scary especially when they lead into the unknown.  When something familiar ceases to exist, our comfort zones diminish and we can feel uncomfortable or nervous.  There is the uncertainty of what a new year will bring, what new steps we will take, what new trails we will blaze, what new paths we will travel, and what joys and sorrows wait around the corner.

Beginnings can be scary too.  2018 is a fresh start – a chance to begin again.  This year doesn’t know us yet and it is waiting like a new and untouched journal.  This year, each of us will write a story unlike any other.  Even the stories we wrote last year and the year before are completely different from the one we will write this year.

“The Land of Beginning Again”

Bing Crosby sang,

There’s a land of beginning again…though we’ve made mistakes, that’s trueLet’s forget the past and start life anew though we wander by a river of tears…let’s find…the land of beginning again where broken dreams come true.

This New Year is the land of beginning again.  The time to change is now.  Now is the time to love, to be present, and to give.  Now is the time to act!  “Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today!”  If we keep put things off until tomorrow, sometimes the most important elements of life must resign themselves to a lonely, indefinite fate in the future that we label “tomorrow.”

The Time is Now

Maybe this year, view life as an empty book.  Start on page one and don’t work or peek ahead.  There are 365 untouched pages and we are new people this year.  The pages of this book are not stained by the worries and troubles of last year.  Worries and troubles will arrive soon enough.  But that doesn’t mean this year can’t be special.

Let this be the year you realize you are not alone.  There are people who care about you, love you, and respect you.  There is a God who died for you, who came to bring you life, and who loves you beyond your power to comprehend!

Let this be the year the real you can shine out: the year you step beyond your comfort zone and dare the impossible.  Know that there is nothing impossible for the God who is right there beside you every step of the way.  He is close to us even when it does not feel like it.

“Go Make a Difference”

This year, dare to dream and dare to fight!  This year, go out on a limb and do not keep living in last year’s story.  Move into this year’s story with confidence and trust.  Walking backwards will leave you tripping.  Face the future with hope.  Pope Saint John Paul II encouraged, “Do not be satisfied with mediocrity.”  Strive to live each day better than the one before.

Give and more will be given to you.  “If tomorrow never comes,” make sure people know you love them and know you care.  Put God first and everything else will fall into place.

Dare to be different this year and at the end (that will be here before we know it), you will find your journal full of life, laughter, tears, mistakes, effort, and beauty!  This year may be a difficult one but it can still be a beautiful one.

Hopefully, at the end of 2018, you will realize that you wrote your own kind of story – one that is new and irreplaceable!

Happy New Year!

Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and days of old lang syne?  For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for days of auld lang syne.
